Description
SHOP DRAWINGS—or BLUEPRINTS—or ENGINEERING DRAWINGS—are not just mysterious collections of lines and symbols and numbers on pieces of white or blue or brown paper designed to confuse people in shops. Neither are they a foreign language that can be learned only through long years of sweat and struggle.
They are a language, however, and one that is fairly easy to learn. They are a system of word-pictures which the designer of an object, or of a piece of equipment, uses to communicate his ideas to the man or woman who is going to build the object, or assemble the equipment, or to maintain and repair it.
The designer uses a shop drawing to show these other people exactly what shapes and sizes the parts of the object are to have, and what relationships each part has to the other parts — how they are to fit together. By reading the drawings, the worker in the shop can learn quickly just what the designer wants him to do — what shape each part is to have, what all of its dimensions are to be, how it fits together with the other parts — and how it is to be welded together with these other parts.
